I recently had someone ask me if I could recommend a triathlon gear bag that’s not crazy expensive. That question inspired Jess and I do do a “what’s in our gym bag” post.
We truly believe that you don’t have to work 3 jobs or take out a loan to do a triathlon and so here’s a look at some of the stuff that’s in my gym bag that is both easy on the wallet and helps me get in lots of killer triathlon training workouts.
Gym bag: For $26 bucks, you can’t go wrong with this bag. It’s the perfect size and it doesn’t look like I’m carting half of my closet to the gym, but it also fits all of that gear you see in the picture with room to spare. I’ve had it for 5 years and it look brand new. Someday, after I do an Ironman, I’ll invest in a fancy triathlon gear bag, but for now, this one does the trick.
Sneakers – I always keep an extra pair of sneakers in my bag, just in case. The ones pictured are Nike Lunarglide from last year.
Towel – Our gym provides towels, but I keep a spare one in my bag to sit on in the car for those days when I’m dripping with sweat.
Deodorant/chapstick – For obvious reasons, I always keep these things in my bag.
Heart Rate Monitor – Jess got me a Garmin for my birthday and I like to keep the heart rate monitor in my bag so I can track my fitness progress. If I don’t keep it in my bag, I forget to take it with me to the gym.
Aqua Sphere Kayenne goggles + an extra pair – These goggles are totally worth the extra few bucks. And since swimming doesn’t require a ton of gear, having a good pair of goggles that don’t leak or give you a headache is clutch. The extra pair is for when I forget my good ones.
iPod mini and headphones – Love my iPod mini. It can fit a ton of songs and audiobooks and those headphones are awesome. They stay put and don’t fall out of my ears thanks to the earhook design.
Hat – I like to wear hats when I workout. It saves me time because don’t have to do my hair.
Shaker bottle – I found this bottle in the grocery store and it’s so rad. The bottom screws off and can hold my protein powder or Cytomax.
Cytomax – I throw a few of these single serving Cytomax packets in my bag for the days when I forget to mix it at home. Cytomax is my favorite electrolyte drink… it’s not too sweet and really gives me a burst of energy. Best of all, it buffers lactic acid so I can go faster and harder.
Accelerade – I drink this during and after my workouts. It has a 4:1 carb to protein ratio. The protein gives your muscles something to work with an it also slows down the carb absorption which extends my endurance and speeds up my recovery. It is also the best tasting drink of its kind. The orange flavor tastes like an orange creamsicle.
Cliff bar – I always have some kind of bar in my bag for those days when I’m STARVING either before or after my workout.
Swim cap – The cool thing about doing triathlons is that you only ever need to buy one swim cap. After a few races, you’ll have quite a collection of colorful caps because you get a swim cap at each race.
Board shorts – I don’t like to walk around in public in my jammers which is why I always wear my board shorts over them until I get to the pool.
So there you have it.
