Sometimes I don’t feel like working out.
I mean, I know that our triathlons won’t train for themselves, so I make sure that I follow our triathlon training plan and get my workouts in, but saying that I wake up super excited to swim, bike, run everyday would be like saying kale chips satisfy my craving for Tostitos. Not so much.
The mental aspect of a training for a triathlon is the hardest part for me, as you can probably tell, and so sometimes I have to trick myself into working out.
I made it up one Sunday afternoon when the last thing I wanted to do was get off the couch and go to the gym. I told myself that I’d just run one lap and do one triathlon strength training exercise because, a lot of times, the hardest part is getting started. Well, one lap turned into two and before I knew it, 45 minutes had gone by and I had done an awesome, full-body workout!
Now that the weather is getting nicer, we’ve taken this workout to our local track which conveniently has all these bars and things to hang from and do exercises on.
So, here’s the workout:
Run one lap around a track, or run for 2 minutes on the treadmill, and then do one strength training exercise. Repeat as many times as you can.
The magic of this workout is that you kinda forget you’re running because you’re trying to think of what strength training exercise you’re going to do.
- Run one lap.
- Do one strength training exercise.
Easy peasy. Even if you don’t feel like working out, I’m pretty confident that you can convince yourself to do ONE lap. Then, all you have to do is keep going.
Here are some of our favorite exercises to choose from:
We like to alternate between an arm exercise and a leg exercise, but honestly, it doesn’t really matter what exercises you do. The point is to choose strength training moves that you like so that you’ll be motivated to do more than one lap.
You can do this workout with a treadmill and weights at the gym, with resistance bands at the track or even at the playground. Get creative and chase away those negative feelings by trying this workout the next time you don’t feel like going to the gym. We dare you.
